Client: Telling Queer History

My communications consulting work with Telling Queer History includes developing and implementing narrative strategy and whole-organization communications plan development and management. The executive director additionally consults with me on matters including reputational risk, donor and fundraising strategy and accessibility.

Client: Artists To Watch

I provide periodic strategic communications consultation to the creative director about new projects and product development, specifically offering frameworks to help the company act on its social justice and equity values.

Client: Jill Quednow

When Jill Q. was notified that, as a previous StorySLAM winner she would be a part of The Moth's GrandSLAM storytelling final in Minneapolis, she knew she wanted to share a powerful story about her life's journey. The events topic for storytellers was "The Great Escape.” Jill was enthusiastic about getting on stage and telling stories from her authentic life as a fat woman who has escaped fatphobia, overcome bullying, shame, and adversity, and resisted the false claims of the diet industry.

Jill has a daily practice of loving and accepting herself, and she wanted that sense of appreciation to come through as she told her story in front of a live audience at Minneapolis’ Pantages Theater.

Jill reached out for a consultation, asking for my help with tightening up the micro-stories she would be telling to make her broader point. Together we worked on building Jill’s ability to confidently claim her place as a beautiful fat woman in ownership of her own authentic stories.

My consultation with Jill included working with a reclaiming and poignant use of the word fat; a redistribution of story themes for greater impact; providing feedback on the overall composition and responsiveness to the event theme; and reflecting back to her the parts of her storytelling that were already powerfully affecting.

“In preparation for the honor of being a Moth storyteller at their recent GrandSLAM event in Minneapolis I called on Lucinda Pepper to help me craft my story with intention and care.

They were amazing at helping me define terms around being a fat woman in today's world. Lucinda offered thoughtful feedback, and I loved how they asked for my consent about how much information I wanted feedback on, [and] about my personal feelings- that was so refreshing.

It was easy for me to work with Lucinda, to feel free to make mistakes until the words started to flow with coherence, and I could create a meaningful story to share.

I felt empowered to tell my story! I absolutely recommend Lucinda for any project you need a keen eye or ear for, they are thoughtful and well versed in today's inclusive language. ”
